Laupāhoehoe, Hawai‘i
The Keanakolu Camp weather station is a cooperative station of the National Climatic Data Center, NOAA Satellite and Information Service. The station is located at an elevation of 5,280 feet (1,609 m) above sea level and has been in continuous operation since 1965. Precipitation is the only data available from the station.
Average annual precipitation for the site is 69 inches (1,752 mm). Metadata for the station and data records can be downloaded from the NCDC website listed above. We have made summary graphs, raw data, and other materials available for download below.
The first graph shows the total annual precipitation for Keanakolu Camp station for the last 41 years. Rainfall can be extremely variable from year to year. In some years, total rainfall can be less than 30 inches (760 mm), while in wet years the total can be over 100 inches (2,500 mm). The second graph shows the average monthly rainfall for the same period. It is apparent that the summer months are considerably drier than the winter months.
The downloadable file below contains copies of the graphs, the raw NCDC data files, metadata for the station, and some summary data we have prepared.
